Folic Acid (Folate, Vitamin B9)

Definition

Folic acid is also known as vitamin B9. It helps in the formation of red blood cells and in DNA production. The test measures its amount in the blood.

Purpose

Screening for vitamin B9 deficiency. It is particularly important in pregnancy, as adequate levels help prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida. It is also ordered in the investigation of certain anemias.

Results

A low level may indicate poor nutrition, malabsorption syndrome (such as celiac disease) or malnutrition. It helps in the diagnosis of folate deficiency anemia or megaloblastic anemia.

Normal Values

2.7 to 17.0 ng/mL or 6.12 to 38.52 nmol/L

Normal ranges may vary slightly between laboratories.

Risks and Limitations

Folate and B12 deficiency produce a similar blood picture (megaloblastic anemia); the two should be evaluated together. Giving folate alone can mask a B12 deficiency and lead to neurological damage.
