HPV Genotyping (Human Papillomavirus Test)

Definition

Looks for the DNA of high-risk HPV in cells of the cervix (the neck of the womb). It detects infections associated with precancerous cervical lesions and cervical cancer.

Purpose

Cervical cancer risk screening, particularly between the ages of 30 and 65. It is often performed together with a Pap test; this combination is called "co-testing":

  • Pap test → detects abnormal cell changes
  • HPV test → detects the presence of the virus

Results

A positive result means that high-risk HPV DNA was found in the sample.

However: this does not mean you have cancer, and it does not guarantee that disease will develop in the future. A positive result indicates an infection that requires follow-up and, if necessary, further investigation such as colposcopy.

Normal Values

Not applicable, reported as positive/negative.

Risks and Limitations

There is no treatment for HPV infection itself. The test result alone does not predict the development of cancer; the physician determines the frequency of follow-up taking into account age, medical history and previous test results.
