Reticulocyte Count
Definition
Counts the immature red blood cells in the blood. Reticulocytes mature within one to two days after entering the bloodstream and carry oxygen throughout the body.
Purpose
Shows the bone marrow's capacity to produce red blood cells:
- Diagnosis of certain types of anemia
- Monitoring whether anemia treatment is working
- Assessing bone marrow function after chemotherapy or transplant
Results

| High | Hemolytic anemia (rapid destruction of red blood cells), bleeding (the body increases production to compensate), hemolytic disease of the newborn |

Risks and Limitations
Reticulocyte count can rise during pregnancy and at high altitude. Certain medications can also artificially raise or lower the result.
