Definition

The SLC6A4 gene encodes the serotonin transporter (5-HTT/SERT); in the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism, the 'short' (S) allele has a lower transcription rate and lower transporter density than the 'long' (L) allele. Some studies have reported reduced response to SSRIs and an increased risk of side effects in S allele carriers; standardized genotype-phenotype categories have not yet been established.
