Diabetes mellitus, Type 2
Definition
Type 2 diabetes is a polygenic disease to which at least 150 different DNA variations contribute; these variants affect beta cell development, insulin secretion/processing and cellular insulin sensitivity. Environmental factors such as obesity, insulin resistance, a sedentary lifestyle and a history of gestational diabetes determine risk together with genetic predisposition.
