Phosphorus (Phosphate)
Definition
Phosphate is an electrolyte. Its roles: building strong bones and teeth (most of the body's phosphate is in the bones), energy production, nerve and muscle function, fluid and pH balance.
Purpose
Diagnosis and monitoring of kidney disease (especially chronic kidney disease), bone disorders and parathyroid dysfunction. Also in uncontrolled diabetes, acid-base imbalance, abnormal calcium levels, or symptoms such as muscle cramps, bone pain or irregular heartbeat.
Results
| High (Hyperphosphatemia) | Low (Hypophosphatemia) |
|---|---|
| Advanced kidney disease/failure, hypoparathyroidism, acidosis, long-term use of steroids/laxatives/enemas | Hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, inadequate phosphorus intake, use of antacids or diuretics |
Normal Values
Laboratory specific.
Risks and Limitations
In children, levels are naturally higher because of bone growth, so a child's result should not be interpreted against the adult range.
