Definition

Plavix (clopidogrel) is an antiplatelet prodrug that is converted to its active metabolite by CYP2C19. In intermediate/poor metabolizers who carry a CYP2C19 loss-of-function allele, the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as stent thrombosis is increased; CPIC recommends an alternative antiplatelet agent in these patients.
