Definition

HLA-B27 is a major histocompatibility complex class I molecule strongly associated with the spondyloarthropathy group of diseases, including ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and arthritis associated with inflammatory bowel disease. A positive result is not diagnostic on its own; a significant proportion of the general population carries it and most never develop disease.
