The Role of Genetic Counseling in the Diagnostic Process

A genetic test is often not enough on its own; what matters is which question the test is answering and what the result means for the person and their family. Genetic counseling builds this bridge.

Pre-test counseling

  • Taking a detailed personal and family history (pedigree)
  • Determining the test best suited to the clinical question
  • Discussing possible results (positive, negative, uncertain) and their implications in advance

Post-test counseling

The result is explained in the context of disease risk, mode of inheritance, follow-up options and a testing plan for relatives. For uncertain results, expectations are managed. Throughout the process, decisions are left to the individual; counseling is informative, not directive.

AdaGen offers pre-test and post-test genetic counseling; you can use the Online Services page to book an appointment.
