Definition

Biallelic variants in the GALK1 gene reduce galactokinase enzyme activity and impair galactose metabolism; unlike classic galactosemia, liver/kidney involvement is generally not seen, but accumulated galactitol causes cataracts in the eye lens in early childhood.
