Definition

Genetic rearrangements in the region of the CYP19A1 gene that encodes the aromatase enzyme excessively increase the conversion of androgens to estrogen. Males develop gynecomastia in late childhood/adolescence, accelerated bone age, an early growth spurt and short stature; females are mostly asymptomatic, with occasional breast enlargement and irregular menstruation. Fertility is usually normal.
