Definition

The NR5A1 gene encodes steroidogenic factor-1, which regulates adrenal and gonadal development and function; a mutation in this gene is found in about 10 to 20% of 46,XY DSD cases. The clinical spectrum is broad, ranging from infertility to ambiguous genitalia and gonadal dysgenesis; spontaneous virilization may occur at puberty.
