Definition

The RPS19 gene encodes a protein of the small ribosomal subunit involved in 18S rRNA maturation; loss of function leads to p53-mediated cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in erythroid progenitor cells. It accounts for about 25 to 30% of Diamond-Blackfan Anemia (DBA) cases; about 40 to 45% of cases are familial and 55 to 60% result from a de novo mutation.
