Definition

AURKA (Aurora Kinase A) is a serine/threonine kinase gene located at 20q13 that regulates mitotic spindle formation and centrosome separation. Overexpression of genes associated with centrosome amplification in multiple myeloma (including RHAMM, TPX2, AURKA) has been found to be linked to poor prognosis; however, this research did not find a strong, dedicated clinical study confirming the independent prognostic weight of AURKA 20q13 gene amplification in standard FISH myeloma panels (as well documented as 1q21/CKS1B gain).
