Definition

Isolated deletion spanning the 5q31-33 region defines a distinct MDS subtype known as "5q- syndrome", characterized by haploinsufficiency of the relevant genes. It presents with macrocytic anemia, a low blast percentage and hypolobulated megakaryocytes; lenalidomide treatment can achieve transfusion independence.
