Chloride (Cl)
Definition
Chloride is an electrolyte that controls the amount of fluid and the acid-base balance (pH) in the body; it helps regulate fluid volume and blood pressure.
Purpose
Routine health screening; for symptoms of fluid/acid imbalance such as prolonged vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, weakness, dehydration or difficulty breathing.
Results
| High (Hyperchloremia) | Low (Hypochloremia) |
|---|---|
| Dehydration, kidney disease, metabolic acidosis (excess acid in the blood) | Heart failure, lung disease, Addison's disease, metabolic alkalosis (excess base in the blood) |
Normal Values
Laboratory specific.
Risks and Limitations
Abnormal results do not always indicate a medical problem. Excessive fluid intake, vomiting, diarrhea and certain medications (including antacids) can affect the levels.
