Definition

Single-base deletions in the VNTR region of the CEL gene lead to misfolding and impaired secretion of carboxyl-ester lipase protein, causing MODY8; pancreatic lipomatosis, progressive exocrine insufficiency, and pancreatic cysts appear from childhood onward. Diabetes generally appears before age 25 and occurs together with exocrine pancreatic involvement.
