Definition

The STK11 (LKB1) gene is a tumor suppressor gene involved in cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and energy metabolism. Loss-of-function variants cause Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, characterized by gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyps, mucocutaneous pigmentation, and predisposition to multiple organ cancers such as colorectal, breast, pancreatic, and ovarian cancer.
