Ceroid Lipofuscinosis, neuronal 5
Definition
The CLN5 gene encodes a protein involved in lysosomal vesicular trafficking. Loss of the protein disrupts lysosomal trafficking and causes toxic lipopigment material to accumulate, resulting in cell damage. Clinical findings typically begin between 4.5 and 7 years of age, with ataxia, treatment-resistant seizures and progressive cognitive and motor decline.
