Definition

The NF2 gene encodes the tumor suppressor protein merlin (schwannomin); when its function is lost, cell proliferation becomes uncontrolled. The disease typically presents around age 20 with bilateral vestibular schwannomas (~90%); additional schwannomas, meningiomas, and ependymomas may develop; its incidence is ~1/25,000.
