Definition

The PPT1 gene encodes the lysosomal enzyme palmitoyl-protein thioesterase-1; its deficiency impairs the lysosomal degradation of lipid-modified proteins and leads to the accumulation of autofluorescent lipopigment. The infantile form begins between 6 and 24 months of age with developmental regression, myoclonic jerks and seizures, and progresses with cerebral atrophy and vision loss.
